Earlier this year had to be one of the highlights of my video career. It’s not everyday that you’re up close and personal with arguably the biggest star of this generation. I’ve been around a lot of stars but the amount of A-listers that were all in one place was a phenomenal experience.
This particular time, we were in New York at the Apollo Theater for a memorial service for A Tribe Called Quest group member Phife. I have to give a huge amount of credence to promoter Ronald McMullen AKA Positive Force (shown in the picture with me) and also fellow promoter Amiyn “Ezact” Eads. These two promoters have been instrumental in helping to build and add credibility to my brand. They always seem to have the connections to get us in some pretty exclusive events and I am grateful that they think enough of my video know how to entrust me to capture some great memories.
Getting back to this monumental moment, as I mentioned there were a ton of big names in the building. LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Dave Chappelle, Queen Lafifah, RZA, Q-Tip and many, many more. We had a chance to interact with them all but we had no idea Kanye was even there until he came out on stage towards the end of the service and spoke on what Phife meant to him and his career. After he finished, he came down in the audience to enjoy the rest of the service/performances. Surprisingly, none of these stars had security around them or it was very minimal. So, he’s standing right in the aisle while KRS-One was performing. Perfect time to introduce myself. “What’s up Kanye? I’m a big fan of your work. Mind if we take a quick picture with you?” Honestly, he wasn’t stand offish but he seemed a little timid to be frank. “Just enjoying the show right now,” he said. I wasn’t letting this moment pass me by. Gave my phone to one of our other colleagues that was there with us and told him to snap it. A great moment in time….right before they rushed him out. Classic pic and just one of those times I was happy to be in the right place at the right time all due to what I can do with a camera.
